Stray Like many Aussie hip-hop artists is a self made, self funded, hard working individual making his way through the national scene.
Starting out early as a singer/songwriter creating original songs on a old beaten up acoustic guitar and later in collage moved into hip-hop and producing. Stray first began performing in early 2000 at a youth week event and has brought Tasmanian hip-hop to more corners of the state than any other Mc or promoter.
“There,s so much talent in the Tasmanian hip-hop scene that so many people don’t get to hear and being a veteran of the scene I feel it’s my duty to try and get the word out as much as I can.”
Stray
Stray himself has never been shy to the stage and brings a certain comical charisma to his live shows, demonstrating his many years experience of live performing. With many headline shows under his belt, Stray has also supported many well known Aussie hop-hop artists such as Reason, Mind over Matter, Chance Waters, Lotek, Drakezilla, Rawthentic, Seth Sentry, Gutz, Maggot Mouth and many many more.
Stray is also one of the few that still regularly run live hip-hop shows through out the state, through his record label “Cardboard Crown King Records”.
Within 6 months of Cardboard Crown King records opening, the label has manage to bring UK’s international rude boy “LOTEK” to Hobart and Launceston along with WOOD Z also from the UK and most recently the “Mega Mini Tour” launching both Stray’s and Skurgeone’s albums through shows in Melbourne,Hobart and Launceston.
And most recently the annual HEARTFEST shows that are fundraising money for the rare Kawasaki Disease (www.kdfoundation.com.au)
Not only has Stray been active on the local scene for over 15 years but he has also held a few different positions in the music industry.
“I worked as a roadie for over 6 years and roadie for the likes of AC/DC, Kylie Manouge, Status Quo and many more. I’ve worked as a reporter for a few streets press magazines and interviewed the likes of Eso from Bliss’n’Eso and The Cat Empire plus many more and I also spent a year as a production manager for a community radio station producing adds, plus a few other little jobs here and there”
Stray
Currently Stray has just released his 6th release “The Lightest Dark” Lp. It showcases his musician/Mc cross breed style of hip-hop and address dark subject matters such as anxiety and suicide.
“I wanted to make an album that was slowed down a little, with darker subjects but done in a lighter way so the the lyrics would be heard more. I guess that’s how the album got its name really. But I also wanted to experiment with a lot of different styles of hip-hop as well. From old school boom bap, to new school dub step grime, to dub to underground to give each track its own flavour”
